CLOTHES CLOSET

The ministry operates a fully-stocked clothes closet which provides gently worn clothing for the entire family. The closet stocks school uniforms, sweaters, shirts and coats, pants and other seasonal items. It also maintains an array of baby clothing and baby items. The Clothes Closet offers clothing to needy families at no cost. However, the closet is also open to people in the general public who may be asked to make a donation for items. These funds are then used to purchase non-recyclable items such as undergarments, pillows and other types of bedding or personal wear.

MEDICAL

Many women with limited incomes do not visit the doctor as often as they should. Therefore, the ministry helps women to address immediate medical concerns such as dental and eye care needs. HFM also purchases medicine and others needs for expectant mothers.

Rent & Utility Assistance

In the City of Memphis, housing continues to be one of the most critical needs for women and children. There simply is not enough clean, safe and affordable housing for struggling families. Those who experience eviction will find it next to impossible to secure other housing.

For this reason, since 2018, HFM has redirected its resources toward “preventing eviction” which is a huge contributor to homelessness.

HFM now offers “pay down” grants of up to $200 (as budget permits) which may be applied to rent or utility expenses. The intent is to help families to remain in their own homes and avoid eviction due to unpaid rent or utilities. This program assists by paying a portion of what is owed to the landlord or utility company. Therefore, applicants must be employed and/or show a willingness to pursue and maintain employment. These grants are only available where eviction will be averted.
